Telegrams
Telegrams are messages sent over distance by a device called the telegraph. It is browny yellowy and the envelope is a similar kind of colour. They are sent if somebody wnts to get help or information from somebody or lots of people. They are short and are used for emergency because its costs the sender money for each letter. For example: people would send things like S.O.S and if someone has died. Here is what a telegram may look like...
MOTAT
Yesterday (8 November) rms 26,9 and 13 went on a school trip to MOTAT. A lady called Elaine greeted us off the bus and told us about the history of some of the really old transport. Some of them are over 150 years old! Then we separated into classes and got our timetable. the first thing we did was we went into the challenge zone. my favourite part of the challenge zone was the electricity ball because you can electrocute people.Muhahahahaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!
Next we went into the classroom to learn about old cameras, typewritters and old phones. The parents said how cool the old phones were when they had them. There was even a phone called the brick because it was so heavy!!
Then we went in the voyager. we got to have two rides because we all shouted encore! encore! and we got to go again. The first ride was a mean rollercoaster ride and the second ride was where you travelled through the ground untill you reach China. You know the saying "dig your way to China?"
Later we went into the mirror maze. Elaine told us that a couple of days ago a young boy was playing tag with his friend when he ran round a corner and crashed into a mirror he had to go to hospital.
Globalisation
1. How did people communicate around the world in the past?
When my parents were my age they didn't have all the thing s that young people have these days. For example, mobile phones did not exist so people couldn't contact each other all the time like they do now. They had to use their home phones or call from public phones. Families did not have computers or laptops so they couldnt email or skpe. People use to write letters to keep in touch.
2. how do we communicate with people around the world today?
Now it is possable to contact with family and friends every minute of every day even when they are on holiday. Most people have moble phones to make this possible. also with most families having computes they can contact everyone using emails, facebook and twitter. Most of the time mum and dad think all this new technology is great, but sometimes they wish for the old days when everything was not immediately available and people met face to face (instead of just sending e-mails or texts).
SciTech
In SciTech at the moment we're using special things call sterilized swabs. They are used for wiping the end of the swab on a dirty place and rubbing the dirty end on to the agar jelly. If you use your hand the bacteria on your hand will grow on the agar jelly as well and give incorrect results. We have swabbed some dirty places such as a 10c coin, floor of bathroom, worm bin, door knob and lots of other places. The one covered with the most bacteria is the worm bin which has the agar surface fully covered followed by the computer keyboard. We are also doing an experiment to see which cleaning product and vinegar is the best by swabbing a dirty place, dipping it in a pool of water, then rubbing it on each product's agar plate. Next we use this special stuff called filter paper which we dip in each product and put it on the agar jelly. The one with the less bacterium on it wins. We are hoping the natural substances are going two win.
SciTech
A couple of days ago my SciTech group did a overall statement on where do we find bacteria in our household. We listed the 10 top hot spots for bacterium living in our household and told a few interesting facts about bacteria. 2 days ago the petri plates that Miss Ellis bought arrived. We did a test to see if they worked so Dom put his hand on the agar jelly (he descibed it squishy and slimey) to see if they worked. We have only seen a couple of bacteria coloneys but we should see quite a lot in a few more days.
SciTech
At school our class is doing a class project about bacteria, mould and fungi. We have all been split into groups of about 4 people and we have been given each a little project to do but still conected to our main project. I'm in a group with Keirah, Ida and Olivia and our little project is where do we find bacteria in our household. We are only up to writing down hot spots where bacteria likes to grow in our house but we're nearly up to writing down what sorts of harmful bacteria lives in our house. Miss Ellis also told us that we're going to grow some real bacteria that we can see with this special stuff that makes it multiply super fast.We had Mr Jackson today and he told us about how viruses (even the common cold) can get into your body cells and destroy them but our immune system (white blood cells) can attack them like little soldiers. He also said that if people are born with weak immune systems they can die just just from catching a cough or cold.
My Speech
For my speech at school I am doing "How to train your parents". In my speech it has a few tips to get out of doing things around the house and there is also stuff about how embarrassing and uncool parents can be. I have tried to make the opening of my speech interesting so I can hook the audience's attention.I have also tried to make it amusing and fun. When I give my speech I will try to use expression to keep the audience interested.
A Moment in time
We were nearly at the top of the London Eye.I was really looking forward to getting to the top but Mum was dreading it because she's afraid of heights. We got to the top and my stomach was churning and my head felt light and dizzy. I got out of my seat to take a look at the view, but my legs wobbled and I nearly fell over. But when I got my grip I looked over the city and all the people looked like hundreds of tiny ants, and the sky scrapers looked like mini Lego models. But just as I started to feel easy again it was all over and we landed at the bottom.
Dance
Last week our year group made masks. Rms 9,13 and ( 26 my class) made masks especially for our assembly which is about a Maori myth called Maui and the Goddess of fire. My mask is the Goddess of fire so it has lots of red, orange and yellow. We are using our masks to dance in for our assembly. We got into groups of about 6,7 on Wednesday (a guess) and I was with Waquffles (Sophie W)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Today we were in those groups and we got given a paragraph of Maui and the Goddess of fire. We planned a small dance for our assembly about that paragraph. I think it is going great but we still need to practice a bit more.
A Mermaid and the Magic Comb
A story from England
On a coast near Lizard Point Cornwall there lived and old man called Lutey and he lived in a old cottage in the village of Cury. On a hot summers day he decided to have a walk on the beach when suddenly he saw a beautiful women sitting on a rock nearby. As he got closer he realized that it was a mermaid and she was crying pitifully. He was curious but he felt like running home. He also saw that the mermaid herself was very alarmed and was trying to hide her tail under a bunch of seaweed. She told him to go away but Lutey replied " Oh don't mind me, I'm just and old lonely man I wont hurt you". She told the old man that she went out to look for food when she swam into a pool and the tide suddenly went out and she got trapped. She pleaded the old man to carry her back to sea. She said she would give Lutey a wish if he did so.So he carried her back to sea and he wished for peace, to break evil spells and to charm away awful diseases. The mermaid happily agreed to give him these powers and also invited him to her cave and if he did she would make him younger, but Lutey refused. The mermaid gave the old man the golden comb she had in her hair. She said'' if you ever want me, just comb the water with this comb, and I will pop up''. And now the rock where Lutey and the mermaid met is called Mermaid Rock.
Cultural Sharing Day
Last week Rm 26 took part in cultural sharing day. We had to bring in something to do with our culture and try and talk about it and answer any questions that anyone asked. I brought in 3 pictures of castles because I am from from England and England has lots of history and old buildings, including castles. The castles were Hever Castle, Bodium Castle and Knole House. Kings and Queens lived there hundreds of years ago. I used to visit them often when I lived there. It was quite scary talking to the whole class. It was only two minutes long but it felt like two hours long.
Dance
In the past 2 weeks my class has been learning dance in the hall as part of our topic Creativity. The sort of dance we have been doing is personal space and making different shapes with our bodies. Last week Miss Ellis put us into pairs - I was with Lukas. Then Miss Ellis put on some relaxing music and we pretended we were in a bubble and we had to touch the places in the bubble that our partners missed. It was pretty scary because we had to perform to the whole class.
Today we learnt about symmetrical dance movements and twisting our bodies. We got into pairs (I was with Pearl) and practiced a routine and then performed to the class. Even though I don't really like dancing, I am still quite enjoying what we are doing in the hall. It is fun and to watch what other people perform.
Today (wednesday 25th) for dance we had to mirror our partners (Ida). This means copying our partners or vice versa with interesting and funky moves. Also we learned 2 new words locomotion and non-locomotion. Locomotion means travelling and moving with cool moves and non-locomotion is when you don't travel but you still do funky moves. Like last week we had to perform to the class.
Watercolours
Last week we experimented with watercolours. We were trying to make an ocean-like background which we will use for painting endangered sea animals.I am going to paint a sea turtle.
cute sea turtle
We used different techniques to make our background look awesome! These were wet on wet which is when you have a wet brush and wet paint. This looks very thin and watery and is also darker than any of the other techniques. Also we did wet on dry which is when you use a wet brush and dry paint. The last technique was dry on dry. We used a dry brush and dry paint. This didn't really work very well.
In conclusion my favourite technique was wet on wet as it was easier to paint and the colours looked really good.
EOTC Week - a week outside the classroom (yay)
Monday
The first day of EOTC Week was visiting the Orakei Marae. When we were there we learned lots about Maori history and how the Marae got burned down. After lunch the girls learned the Poi dance and the boys learned the Haka. This was good fun!
Tuesday
On Tuesday we went to Treetops which is near Woodhills and it is an area of high ropes, platforms and bridge activites. The first thing we did was to get harnessed up. Then we all had to do a practice course. Next we got to do all the courses up to 4 but I didn't have time to do course 4 so I was a bit disappointed. It was great fun anyway! This was my favourite day of the week!
Wednesday
Today we went orienteering to Waitarua Reserve. My mum came as a parent helper and we got into groups, my group was me, Annabel, Nathan, Waki and Rama. We had to run around finding clues and it was very tiring! After lunch we all played games and the hardest part of all was walking all the way back to school!
Thursday
Today we went to the Aquatic pools and my dad was a parent helper. I was in a group with Ben and Katrina. The best part was the hydoslide and the whirlpool. This was a really cool day. I LOVED E0TC week!!!!! :-)
